County Wellness
Program Celebrates Change!
Need motivation to make healthier choices?
Healthy Carolinians of Carteret County and the Eat Smart Move More
Coalition are working to address obesity and physical inactivity issues in
Carteret
County.
From this partnership a free countywide wellness program, CountDown
Carteret, was created. If you’re ready to make the
changes they are here to help get you on the right path.
CountDown Carteret is a yearlong program that encourages
participants to adopt healthy habits for life. Participants
who register for CountDown Carteret choose 5 habits from an A-Z list, and
commit to working on those changes for one year. Small changes today can
have a big impact on your health down the road.
The CountDown Carteret program
is based on the honor system, but the participants are not alone.
Support is just an email or phone call away. Participants
this year will receive the Eat Smart Move More Newsletter, information on
local resources and upcoming events, ideas and fun activities for better
health, and other community related news. “Once you make
the decision to live healthier, it is something you have to keep working
at”, and “We want to help people make changes they can stick with” says Andrea Boyd, Health Educator with the Carteret County
Health Department and Chair of the Eat Smart Move More Coalition.
The CountDown Carteret Celebration event is
OPEN TO THE PUBLIC and will be held at the Boys and Girls Club in Morehead City
on Saturday May 31st from 10 am to 2 pm. We
are celebrating the success of the first year participants and also taking
registrations for cycle two of the program. The theme is
“Let’s Get Physical” and will promote different types of physical
activity. “A variety of activities are scheduled from
10:00 am to 2:00 pm for the public to try. This includes
a group exercise class provided by Gold’s Gym, a belly dancing demo, yoga
exercises, and a karate demo, “said Ms. Boyd. Curves of
Beaufort and Curves of Morehead City, as well as members of the Whole Health
Resource Network will be onsite promoting health and wellness activities
that day. “The goal for the event is to create a family
fun event, one where everyone can try different types of physical activity
and incorporate them into their daily routine.” said Ms. Boyd.
If group exercises aren’t your favorite, you can tryout other
activities such as Dance Dance Revolutions video game, a basketball
shootout, the hula hoop challenge, the jump rope relay, and the
bean bag toss, to name a few.
To be eligible for the DOOR PRIZES all you
have to do is participate in the activities. Items to be
given away include gift cards, t-shirts, an exercise machine, heart rate
monitor, personal trainer session, roller blades, and many more.
Grand Prizes reserved for those who participated in CountDown
Carteret’s first cycle are a Nintendo Wii game system and 2 bicycles donated
by Bikes R In.
